Project Overview
Design Space
Creating a more personable, interesting, and accessible take on smart home lighting. Specifically focusing on the intersection of home lighting and people’s evening routines/emotional journeys.
Purpose
Use immersive and personable home lighting to help people maintain a consistent, healthy evening routine that allows them to gradually wind down at the end of the day.
Who We Want to Help
Our design is for those who struggle managing their time at the end of the day leading to inconsistent evening routines and progressive exhaustion. It is also intended for smaller space, such as studios and single apartments.

How It Works
Our design consists of 2 aspects: a physical flower light and an app that controls its light and movement. The rationale behind the flower design was to implement a euphoric hyperrealism of nature at home using the flower and create dynamics within the environment with the controls and movements.
Schedule
illustrate the opening (Come home) and closing (Bedtime) of the flower. Users can set up the time for the opening and closing of the petals in the app according to each users’ life patterns and daily routines. These set schedules can be changed at any time using the “Schedule” page on the app.

Mechanics Behind the Petals
The petals will automatically open and bloom at a set time for “Come home” and close when it's the “Bedtime.” Each petal will be connected to the control base via clear wires to initiate the movements of opening and closing. The clear wires are connected to the petals from the middle of the small base which holds all the petals in place. During the opening, the wires will loosen and release the petals to open & bloom to light up. During the closing, the wires will tighten up and pull the petals into the middle so the flower will close up.

Blooming Flower Concept
-
Wanting to create a more personable design than current smart lights that largely feel cold, sterile, and uninteresting
-
Encouraging immersive relaxation by designing a light that seems less like a piece of technology and more like a live plant that blooms and closes.
-
Creating multiple layers of visual engagement, both with the the lighting fixture itself and the soft changing of the lights’ hue and brightness
Psychology of Lights and Colors
To understand our problem space, we gathered information from various sources to understand how lights affect people’s emotions, color theory and lighting placement in rooms.
Color Theory

Warm Light
Warm lights make the environment feel more welcoming and relaxing
Cool Light
Cooler lights make the environment more stimulating - they make us feel more alert, more focused, and can increase productivity levels
Yellow Light
-
Correspond to dusk and dawn, times when the body is generally more relaxed
-
may be beneficial for a restaurant, a rest area, or a bedroom
Psychology of Lighting
-
Brighter lights heighten emotions.
-
Brighter and stronger lights are suggested for the morning and during the day, while dimmer lights are recommended for night.
-
Natural light makes you feel happier
